If you don’t know your MEID, visit https://eims.maricopa.edu/MAW/SPAT.html and choose the option: Forgot Your MEID? If it’s not your first visit, and you know your MEID but you’ve simply forgotten your password, you can look up your password if you have forgotten it, by choosing: Forgot Your Password?
  3. Complete the Course Orientation Quiz after you’ve completed the orientation in Blackboard. Open the folder below.

Week 7 Weekly Podcast: Paper 2

Date February 26, 2008

We are using this week to focus on Paper 2 and rewrites of Paper 1 for those of you who will need to do that. Both will be due by midnight on Sunday. You will find comments on your graded papers in the My Grade area. Be sure to download the file that I uploaded to you. Listen the following podcast to hear the guidelines for the 2nd paper and the rewrite guidelines.

I am really impressed with the number of A’s and B’s so far in this course. Some of you are kicking booty! Grades always improve in the second half of the semester, so B’s and C’s usually end up being A’s and B’s. Unfortunately, most people who are failing now, usually end up failing the course. That’s most, but not all. There’s still hope for you, but you have to make it happen. Come see me if you need help. If you want it; it can happen!

Be patient with your progress. Keep up with the reading and the assignments. If you miss one, don’t freak out. Just take a deep breath and get it done as soon as you can. I can’t believe the number of people who give up because they’re a few assignments behind. Quitting takes more effort than getting caught up. Do that instead. I don’t get very many visitors in my office asking for help. Come see me.

The last day to withdraw from a class without instructor signature is this Friday, so if you are planning on dropping a class, you might want to do it by Friday. After Friday, you will need to obtain an instructor signature, which means you will have to go see that instructor and talk to him/her.

Week 6 Weekly Podcast

Date February 20, 2008

This week’s podcast is a little different. It is an actual recording of the hybrid class where I cover all the relevant information for this week. The last part may get a little confusing because I was showing students how to do the assignment online while in class. You will want to view the screencast for that information if you were not in class: http://screencast.com/t/3oTEgFEI

We are working on Assn.#6: Locating Periodical articles in a database this week. This is not a difficult assignment, but it does require having access to the library databases. You will need a activated ID card to access the databases from home. Just take your SMC ID card to the library to have them activate it. This must be done each semester you are enrolled here. You may use any library you choose, so if you prefer the public library, have at it. Just be sure you are searching databases and not the internet.

You’ll start to see some graded assignments in the My Grades area in Blackboard. If you plan to do any rewrites, be sure to get them done right away. You only a week to do them. As for discussions and journals, these are timely assignments and must be done when assigned. No late journals or discussions will be graded. Your blog journals are assigned in the Odyssey assignments. Go back and look at those assignments to see what journals you are missing. You will have an opportunity to earn some points to make up for a few missing journals later this week when I post our 5th Week Assessment Survey. You will earn 10 bonus points for filling out the survey honestly. More on that later.

Getting Started for the Spring ‘08 Semester

Date December 26, 2007

In order to get started with this ENG102 course, you must first send Dr. Cooper an email message requesting the start up information. You can send your email to dr.coop at freshmancomp.com. Once your email is received, you will get in return instructions for completing the orientation. The orientation is just a mechanism for helping us both determine if taking an online or hybrid course is right for you. Many students are misinformed and think that an online or hybrid class is easier because they don’t have to come to class. It is true that you don’t visit the campus on a regular basis to attend class, but you still must attend the online class activities which include participating in discussions in the course forum and watching and listening to online lectures via podcast and vodcast.

There are several online websites that you will need to register for, including the course social network. You can get started with that by visiting the site: http://freshmancomp.ning.com/ and clicking the Sign Up link on the upper right side of the page. Dr. Cooper will register you after you’ve emailed her if you can’t figure it out on your own. You will also need to visit the Blackboard site: http://www.maricopa.edu/blackboard/ We’ll send you more information on Bb via email in case you’ve never used it.

So as you can see there is lots to get done before we get started, so be sure to send Dr. Cooper an email from the email account you use regularly and plan to use for this course. If you don’t have an email account, we recommend you visit Google and sign up for a Gmail account. http://mail.google.com

Be sure to watch the final paper screencast to get tips on how to complete your final paper. And don’t forget to read the guidelines for the paper. Don’t lose points because you didn’t pay attention to the guidelines.

Final Paper Review
I created a screencast that goes over the formatting of your final paper. I used the student example of a final paper that I just posted in Blackboard for you. The screencast covers the formating of the cover page, main paper, and the works cited. I also cover the grading rubric, so you can see how you will be graded. It’s 15 minutes, so have a listen if you’re curious about if you’re doing the paper correctly.

Allie Allie In Come Free

Date October 22, 2007

We are roughly at the half way point now, and true to form some of you have disappeared. Remember it’s your responsibility to take care of business. If you want to pass this class you need to do the work. Enough said. If you don’t want to pass, you need to fill out a drop form and bring it to class so I can sign it for you. The last day for student initiated withdrawal is November 26th. If you haven’t submitted your form by then, you will get a grade that you have earned for this course.

Sorry I missed most of the conferences last week, but after you take a look at your grades in Bb, if you still have a problem you would like to discuss with me, g ive me a call and we can chat. Most of you are doing a great job, so keep up the good work. For you others, is there hope for you? There’s always hope, but it begins with you making a commitment and getting your work completed. There’s no more time for procrastination. Get busy.

It’s Conference Time

Date October 15, 2007

How am I doing? Is that what you’re wondering? Well, let’s sit down and talk about it. Sign up for a mandatory conference this week. It will only take 15 minutes. We’ll take a look at your work and your progress for the first half of this semester. The real work is about to begin, so let’s see who’s rolling along. Go to the Discussion Board in Blackboard to see available times and to sign up.

Hybrid Wednesday

Date September 19, 2007

Today you are to be working independently on Assn. #4 & Assn. #5. Be sure to check in if you are not in class. You can check in by logging into Blackboard, sending an email, or posting a comment to this blog post. Only send an email if you have a ligitimate question.

Both assignments are due by midnight Sunday. You will get Assignment #3 back on Thursday, so don’t submit Assn. #5 until you get that one back. I want for you to see if you’re doing the prospectus correctly before you submit another one.

Last day to take the quiz is Wednesday. Make an appointment with the Testing Center before you go.
