Module II Start

Date July 10, 2007

Welcome to Module 2, and congratulations to the 15 of you who finished Module 1. I feel like this will be the core group that will do very well in this course. Now if any of the others plan to step up their game, I’m all for that as well. Remember I’m here to help you. But realistically if you haven’t done anything yet, it’s probably best you drop the course now and take it again in the fall.

So we finished the first part of our five week journey, and I believe the hardest part for some was choosing a topic. But now that we all have one, it’s time to start doing some serious research. For module 2 we have 3 assignments and two are research odysseys, searching for books and periodicals. The third assignment is an assignment on evaluating sources. This is an important step in the process because we want to make sure we have good sources in our paper, so be sure to do a good job with this assignment. There will be screencasts posted later.

We will write the second half of our position paper in this module. This paper picks up right where we left off in paper 1 with the position statement and some arguments. This time we will need to use a little of our research to help make our arguments convincing, but it will still be a fairly short paper.

We have two discussions this week, so be sure you get started on the first right away. You will first discuss your position on the issue you chose. Others will try to poke holes in you position statement. Then in the Discussion 3 you will argue your position. Your classmates will offer opposing views that you will need to consider and possibly counter argue. It should be fun. I’ll be splitting the discussion in half, so there won’t be so many students in the discussion. Don’t be alarmed.

Don’t forget to take your Quiz #1 by midnight tonight, and yes, I do have to the grade the quizzes too. So you don’t have to send me emails trying to justify your answers and expressing disappointment that the computer didn’t give you credit for a misspelled answer. Spelling counts, but you do get partial credit when I grade it.
